The Microbiology section uses both culture and serological techniques to assist in the diagnosis of disease and to monitor patient management.

The majority of Microbiology services are available from 7:30 a.m.. – 6 p.m., 7 days a week, with an on-call service for CSF specimens.

The following investigations are performed in the section:

  • Actinomycosis
  • Biopsy Specimen
  • Blood Cultures (using a Bactec 9240 machine)
  • Bordetella pertussis
  • Cerebrospinal Fluid
  • Dark Field Microscopy for Spirochaetes
  • Dermatomycosis
  • Eye swab
  • Environmental specimens
  • Faeces Examinations for parasites, bacterial infection, Rotavirus antigen and occult blood.
  • C. difficil
  • Fungal Infection
  • Gonorrhea
  • Intrauterine sepsis
  • Nasal swab
  • Pinworm Examination
  • Sputum
  • Throat Swab
  • Tuberculosis Investigation
  • Urine Investigation
  • Vaginal Infection
  • Wound Sepsis

The Microbiology section is almost self sufficient in producing all culture media. Approximately 20,768 tests are performed per month.
