The
Microbiology section uses both culture and serological techniques to assist in the diagnosis of disease and to monitor patient management.
The majority of Microbiology services are available from 7:30 a.m.. 6 p.m., 7 days a week, with an on-call service for CSF specimens.
The following investigations are performed in the section:
- Actinomycosis
- Biopsy Specimen
- Blood Cultures (using a Bactec 9240 machine)
- Bordetella pertussis
- Cerebrospinal Fluid
- Dark Field Microscopy for Spirochaetes
- Dermatomycosis
- Eye swab
- Environmental specimens
- Faeces Examinations for parasites, bacterial infection, Rotavirus antigen and occult blood.
- C. difficil
- Fungal Infection
- Gonorrhea
- Intrauterine sepsis
- Nasal swab
- Pinworm Examination
- Sputum
- Throat Swab
- Tuberculosis Investigation
- Urine Investigation
- Vaginal Infection
- Wound Sepsis
The Microbiology section is almost self sufficient in producing all culture media. Approximately 20,768 tests are performed per month.
